As Lord Ganesha was born
Once upon a time mother Parvati wanted to take a bath. She created a boy from the dirt of her body and asked him to guard, while standing outside cleaned itself. In the meantime Lord Shiva returned home. When he tried to enter the house, preventing him from the boy. In anger, Shiva cut out the boy's head. When Parvati saw this, she burst into tears. To console her, Shiva sent his troops (gana) to sleep at the top get found anyone with the head pointing north. They found an elephant sleeping thus and brought the head. Shiva then attached the elephant's head onto the body of the boy and revived him. He named the boy Ganapati, the commander of the troops means. He granted him a boon that everybody would worship Him (Ganesha) before beginning any work.
