Navratri: Nine Days explained

Navratri- India a country known for its varied festivals and celebration is rich in beliefs. The rich historical and cultural background of India has so many different festivals each with a proper meaning, reason and significance. Fun and enjoyment are common aspects of each of these festivals, which sets the festive mood.
Navratri, is one such auspicious festival that is celebrated for nine days. Navratri literally means nine nights. It is one of the most important Hindu festivals. Dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga, the deity of power, Navratri has a deep significance and meaning attached to it. Each day of the nine-day festival are dedicated to the worship of different forms of Goddess Durga, which explains the religious importance of the occasion. Here is a write-up that talks about the significance of Nanvratri and its nine days.

The First Three Days of Navratri

During the nine days of Navratri, Sri Durgadevi wanders in the Universe along with Her nine weapons, with the help of the Absolute Fire Principle. The first three days of Navratri are devoted to the worship of the Goddess Durga. On the first day of the Navaratras, a small bed of mud is prepared in the puja room of the house and barley seeds are sowed. On the tenth day, the shoots are about 3 - 5 inches in length. After the puja, these seedlings are pulled out and given to devotees as a blessing from god. These initial days are dedicated to Durga Maa, the Goddess of power and energy. Each day is dedicated to a different appearance of Durga. Kumari, which signifies the girl child, is worshipped on the first day of the festival. Parvati, who is the embodiment of a young woman, is worshipped on the second day. The destructive aspects of Goddess Durga symbolize the commitment to acquire triumph over all the evil tendencies. Hence, on the third day of Navratri, Goddess Kali is worshipped, who represents the woman who has reached the stage of maturity.

Fourth to Sixth Days of Navratri

the Primal Divine Energy completely annihilates the distressing frequencies coming from the seven Patals (the nether regions) to the earth every day, in an ascending order.During these days, Lakshmi Maa, the Goddess of peace and prosperity is worshipped. Fifth day is known as Lalita Panchami and all books, pens and literature especially of children studying are place in puja and a lamp is lit to invoke Saraswati Maa, the Goddess of knowledge and art. These books are not touched by the student. When a person acquires triumph over evil tendencies of ego, anger, lust and other animal instincts, he/she experiences a void. This void is filled with spiritual wealth. For the purpose, the person approaches Goddess Lakshmi, to acquire all the materialistic, spiritual wealth and prosperity. This is the reason why the fourth, fifth and sixth day of Navratri are dedicated to the worship of Lakshmi - the goddess of prosperity and peace.
Although the individual has acquired victory over evil tendencies and wealth, he is still deprived of true knowledge. Knowledge is required to live the life of a humane, even though he/she is prospered with power and wealth. Therefore, Goddess Saraswati is worshipped on the fifth day of Navratri.

Seventh and Eighth Day of Navratri

The seventh day is dedicated to worshipping Saraswati, the goddess of art and knowledge. Prayers are offered with an aim to seek spiritual knowledge. This in turn will free us from all earthly bondage. A 'yagna' is performed on the eight day. This comprises of a sacrifice honoring goddess Durga as well as bids her farewell. The sacrifice or offering is made out of clarified butter (ghee), rice pudding known as kheer and sesame seeds.

Ninth Day of Navratri

The ninth day is the final day of Navratri celebrations. It is also known as 'Mahanavami'. On the day, Kanya puja is performed to worship nine young girls, who have not yet reached the stage of puberty. These nine girls symbolize one of the nine forms of goddess Durga. The feet of girls are washed to welcome the goddess and show respect to her. The girls are offered a set of new clothes as a gift from the devotees at the end of the puja.

Navratri Fasts

The fast is observed for all 9 days beginning from the first day of Navratri; some people observe the fasts for the first and last day only. It is believed a person will overcome obstacles and attain prosperity, happiness and spirituality by observing of this fasts. During navratri non-veg, alcohol should not be consumed and those devotees who smoke should abstain from it during this time. Many people do not shave and cut hair or nails during navratri. Fruits and milk can be consumed during the fasts and one can observe Ekana means you can eat a complete meal once during the day.

Navratri Puja Rituals

You can read Durga Saptashati, Durga Stuthi and other Devi stotras and chalisas. One can visit temples and pray to the goddess and offer flowers and fruits and light diyas.

Advice for Astrologers: Document Your Lives

One of the best pieces of advice that I could give to people who are just getting into the field of astrology, or to astrologers who are already in the field, is to document your lives.   Document your lives as extensively as possible.
Usually this means keeping a journal of some sort in which you record daily events in your life as they unfold.  The traditional method is obviously just to write it out on paper, although some might prefer to type it out on a computer, or perhaps record audio journals.
It doesn’t really matter what the format is, as long as you are keeping track of various developments that are occurring in your life on a regular basis.
The reason that this is important is because one of the greatest truisms in astrology is that the best case study that you will ever have is your own life and birth chart.  This is because you will never know anyone else’s life, in all of its subtleties and complexities, as well as you know your own.

Sure, most of the time you see astrologers using celebrity birth charts as examples in case studies, but a large part of the reason for this is that the lives of celebrities are often so well documented, whereas this isn’t the case for most average people.
Celebrity charts are not a sufficient source for all case studies though, because in using them there are often issues surrounding public perceptions of the celebrity being disconnected from who they really are as a person.
When it comes down to it you can only really have an outsider’s perspective on the life of a celebrity, no matter how well-documented their life is, and many of the details get lost when your subject is at that much of a distance.  In my opinion the loss of the details outweighs many of the benefits gained by the (questionable) sense of objectivity one gets from studying a public figure.
Contrast that with the alternate option.  All possible issues of bias and subjectivity aside, you have the unique ability to record on any given date the exact events, emotions and circumstances that are present in your life.   This is exactly the type of data that astrologers need when they are studying the application of various astrological techniques – techniques that are used to study the events, circumstances and internal states that individuals encounter during the course of their lives.
There is one catch though – you have to record everything, because most of the time the full significance of events is only apparent in retrospect, and sometimes seemingly minor events can have great astrological importance.  The chance meeting of some stranger, missing a bus that caused you to be late for work, suddenly having an idea about some concept, etc.  Even the smallest things can turn out to be very important, especially within the broader perspective of one’s chronology.
So, that is my exhortation to astrologers for the day:  document your lives, and do it as carefully as possible.  This is the single best thing that you can do in the long term for testing the techniques of astrology and coming to a better understanding of how it works in practice.

What is Moon Sign - Moon Sign Importance (Basis of Vedic Astrology)

In the Kundali, the sign in which Moon is located is called Moon sign. It is also known as Birth sign. In Vedic astrology, Moon is considered the most important out of all the planets. It is also given the Name Sign. Because, as per astrology, Moon sign is the basis of naming a child. Name beginning from the alphabet of a Nakshatra’s Pad where Moon is located during birth, decides the birth sign name of an individual.

Moon sign or Rashi is one of the basic and defining parameters used in Indian astrology. Since Moon changes its sign after every 2 & 1/4 days, the vedic astrologers use its movement as a base parameter instead of Sun which moves from one house to next in a month's time. In Vedic Astrology the placement of the moon in a particular sign in the birth chart represents the Moon sign for the native.

Astrologers on Rakhi (Rakshabandhan)

I recently read one article on Internet that suggests that the sisters should tie Rakhi on brothers' hand before 11 am on the day of Rakshabandan. The suggested reason is that the Lunar Eclipse (Chandra Grahan) is coinciding with Rakshabandhan this year. Grahan is not considered good for any auspicious event. The Lunar eclipse is starting from 11.53 pm and will end at 5.27am next day for the city that the article had been published. The article states though the eclipse is starting late night, no auspicious task should be taken 12 hours before and after it. Article further states that the condition is worsening as the eclipse coincides with the season of kalsarpa dosha which is a time for disasters.

In my opinion, this is another example of how astrologers unnecessary create panic and confusion in public's mind without talking anything specific. The eclipse, as mentioned, starts almost late night and defining it precisely 12 hours doesn't make any sense to me. Will the eclipse will suddenly start showing effects from one minute after 11am? In my opinion, if 11am is safe so does 12noon.

Goddess Lakshmi origins are added to the large Sri Suktam

Goddess Lakshmi origins are added to the large Sri Suktam (Hymn to Sri ") that the Rig-Veda was eventually 1000-500 BC found
The birth of goddess Lakshmi is an old story connected. Durvasa the short-tempered sage once presented Indra, the king of the gods, with a garland of flowers that would never fade. Indra gave this garland to his elephant, Airavata. Sage Durvasa saw the elephant trampling the divine garland and tempered, as he was, cursed Indra, because he showed disrespect to the sage had. The sage cursed Indra that he and all the gods would lose their power because they had made them so proud and vain. Because of the curse, the demons defeated the gods from the sky.
The defeated gods then went to escape to the Creator Brahma, who asked to obtain the ocean of milk jug to the nectar of immortality. The gods went to Lord Vishnu to seek his support. Vishnu took the Avatar Kurma (Tortoise) and supported the mountain as a churning rod Mandarachal, while the king of serpents, Vasuki became the churning rope. The gods and demons (under the leadership of the pious and wise King Mahabali) both helped each other in churning the ocean of milk.
Among the many divine gifts which appeared from the ocean, goddess Lakshmi appeared and then chose Shri Vishnu as her husband because he alone had the power to control Maya (illusion). For this reason, as Lakshmi, the daughter of the sea, the moon also appeared from the ocean during the churning, the moon is called her brother.
Goddess Lakshmi is incorrectly connected only with money, and the popular public perception is that she is the goddess of money. But this is wrong: the holy goddess is also the goddess of prosperity, divinity and purity. She is also the goddess of Brahma-vidya (divine knowledge) and one of its names is "Vidya" - which literally means knowledge. She is the goddess from whom we ask for happiness in the family, friends, marriage, children, food and wealth, beauty and health. Therefore, it is a very popular goddess who is worshiped by every Hindu. When she the goddess of prosperity, it is also known as Dharidranashini (destroyer of poverty) and Dharidradvamshini (someone who is against poverty).

Goddess Lakshmi's origins are found in the great Sri Sukta

Goddess Lakshmi's origins are found in the great Sri Sukta ("Hymn to Sri") that was added to the Rig-Veda sometime between 1000 and 500 B.C.

The birth of goddess Lakshmi is related to an ancient story. Durvasa the short-tempered sage once presented Indra, the king of the gods, with a garland of flowers which would never wilt. Indra gave this garland to his elephant, Airavata. Sage Durvasa saw the elephant trampling the divine garland and, short-tempered as he was, cursed Indra, for he had shown disrespect to the sage. The sage cursed Indra that he and all the gods would lose their power because it had made them so proud and vain. Due to the curse, the demons vanquished the gods out of the heavens.

The defeated gods then went to seek refuge to the Creator Lord Brahma who asked them to churn the ocean of milk, to obtain the nectar of immortality. The gods then went to Lord Vishnu, to seek his assistance. Lord Vishnu took the Avatar Kurma (Tortoise) and supported the Mandarachal mountain as a churning rod, while the king of the serpents, Vasuki, became the churning rope. The gods and the demons (under the leadership of the pious and wise King Mahabali) both helped each other in churning the ocean of milk.

Amongst the host of divine gifts which appeared from the ocean, goddess Lakshmi appeared and then chose Shri Vishnu as her consort, as only He had the power to control Maya (illusion). Because of this, Lakshmi is also called the daughter of the sea; since the moon also appeared from the ocean during the churning, the moon is called her brother.

Goddess Lakshmi is incorrectly connected only with money, and the popular public perception is that she is the goddess of money. This, however, is incorrect: the holy goddess is also the goddess of prosperity, divinity and purity. She is also the goddess of Brahma-vidya (divine knowledge) and one of her names is "Vidya" - which literally means knowledge. She is the goddess of whom we ask for happiness in family, friends, marriage, children, food and wealth, beauty and health. Hence she is a very popular goddess who is worshipped by every Hindu. As she is the goddess of prosperity, she is also called as Dharidranashini (destroyer of poverty) and Dharidradvamshini (one who opposes poverty).

Lord Vishnu was then reminded of his all-pervasive power, was the most important feature of the purity. His was the duty to preserve, bring back to purity in the world when it was threatened. Brahma created during Shiva destroyed. The Puranas are very clear on one aspect: none of the three are better than others. Lord Shiva - The Dancer Who Recreates

None gave him birth, He knows no Lord. None rules Him in the world, nor yet controls. No features mark Him out, yet cause He is. Prime cause of that which steers, the senses five, the soul within.” Shvetashvattara Upanishad.

Around the beginning of this millennium, it is said there was a revival of Saivism and the power of Shiva. By then the idea of Shiva had built into the vedic texts too. He is identified with Rudra in the Rig Veda. Various texts give different versions of his creation and each one they say is symbolic of his many facets. He, Shiva, is the one who has conquered time, for He destroys and re-creates. He, Shiva, is white in colour for white stands for justice in acts of annihilation. He, Shiva, is the one who has conquered death and historically his resurgence from the Pre-Aryan period to the present day obsession is one way of looking at it.

Another story says the Lord of all beings was a householder and of his wife Usha was born a child. The child kept crying so the father questioned him as to why he cried. He said he cried for the want of a name. The father was quick to name him if that could bring some quiet and he was called Rudra, from the rot word rud which means, to cry.

The Linga Purana has yet another version to relate. According to this story, Brahma, the creator had five mind-born sons. Many fathers may be able to sympathize with Brahma, for the father of creation too was dissatisfied with his sons. None of them showed any promise, the typical progenitor felt. He contemplated on Siva for solution. Siva himself appeared and told him He was his son. Siva then assumed the ardhanareeswara form.

The ardhanareeswara is yet another concept that Shiva stands for. In this aspect he draws the feminine into his own self. He is half man, half woman. A symbol of the Samkhya philosophy which talks of Purusha (the male energy) and Prakriti (the female energy) together making the cosmic energy.

As Ardhanareeswara, Shiva destroys the old, for in destruction there is renewal, it cleanses and constructs anew. In this new construction, he is the Father of Brahma. And the cycle of time, the process of recreation begin all over again.

In successive kalpas, or age, Shiva donned five roles. The five-form concept later took shape as the Panchamukha Shiva or Five faced Shiva with each face given a direction – the dimension of space had thus been added to the dimension of time. As Sadyojata he faced East, as tatpurusha he faced north, as Aghora he faced west and as Ishana he faced south. As Sadesiva (Eternal Shiva) he was looked above; symbolic of him being above all space. In the Linga Purana, Vishnu described Sabasiva as a pillar where the Ishana was the crown, Tatpurusha, the face, Aghora the heart and Vamadeva his sex organ and Sadyojata as his feet. The metaphor had been gathered into a manageable symbol and while many other stories exist for the worship of the phallic symbol of Shiva, this was the beginning.

A story is told located at the legendary ashram of Daruvana. Today some say it is the same place as where the Jageswar temple in Almora stands on the lower Himalayas. Here, some sages were engaged in penance. To test their dedication, Shiva began dancing in the forests. The wives of the sages who had gone to collect firewood remained transfixed. At sundown when the sages cam in search of their wives and caught sight of a man dancing to the joy of their wives, they cursed him, not knowing he was Shiva himself.

By the curse, his penis fell to the ground and rose with the brilliance of fire in both directions. The earth trembled and Vishnu and Brahma came to look for solutions. They each went south and north respectively in search of its end, but could not find it; symbolizing both infinity in space and eternity in time. Shiva was then accepted as Supreme by both Brahma and Vishnu and he withdrew.

(Being of the same rank, there are many stories on the quarrels and disputes between Shiva and Vishnu, their assertion of superiority one over another is a debate even today amongst their followers!)

Shiva married twice, once the granddaughter of Brahma, named Sati and then Sati again when she was reborn as Parvati, the daughter of the King of the Himalayas, Daksha. He had two sons, Ganesa and Kartikeya.

One of the derivations of the word Rudra denotes running and constant movement, the pulsation of life, its steps. Therefore Shiva is also perceived as the Cosmic dancer, Nataraja. The magnificent Nataraja who dances though life has won many a hearts and imaginations. Many temples have been built to the Lord Nataraja across Kanakasabha (golden hall) at the temple of Chidambaram.

Of Shiva, one can not write and stop. There are sixty-four lilas or sports in which he is said to have partaken and infinite stories from his tumultuous marriage to his drinking of the poison during the famous incident in Hindu mythology of the churning of the ocean. Through all the myths Shiva emerges the same, powerful, impulsive, angry, frightening, charming, one who holds the damru (drum) either sides of which makes our night and day and one whose ankle bells are the source of all sound. To write on Shiva is as continuous a process as the idea of Shiva himself.

Lord Shiva appears in a meditating but ever-happy posture.

Lord Shiva appears in a meditating but ever-happy posture.
He has matted hair which holds the flowing Ganges river and a crescent moon, a serpent coiled around his neck, a trident (Trishul) in his one hand and ashes all over his body.

The Lord's attributes represent his victory over the demonic activity, and calmness of human nature. He is known as the "giver" god. His vehicle is a bull (symbol of happiness and strength) named Nandi.

Shiva-Linga, a sign of the Lord, is adored instead of him. Shiva temples have Shiva-Linga as the main deity.
